Five Tips, for a Perfect City Break

  1. Long before you set foot on the ground of a new city, get to grips with a map – even if it’s just the basic shape of the city – find yourself a point of orientation (a river, a tall landmark etc) and get a feel for where things are in the city relative to this point
  2. When picking accommodation, google street view is your friend. It’s obviously only a snapshot of an area but it can be a good indication (along with reviews of course), sussing out ‘safe’ neighbourhoods is a must
  3. Whilst there’s a lot I’m sceptical about using TripAdvisor for, we do use it to put together a list of ‘must see’ attractions. Travel blogs are better for finding lesser-know attractions or some extra tips
  4. Always research wet-weather alternatives. It’s all well and good to have 3 days of sightseeing and photo-taking planned… until it chucks with rain the whole time you’re there. Save yourself the time and hassle of trying to decide where to go on a rainy morning by having a plan
  5. Stick the city name and ‘free walking tour’ into your search engine, loads of cities offer these (I think particularly in Europe) – although they’re advertised as free, the guide will likely be working for tips. We try to take these as early in a trip as we can as they can really help with getting your bearings and pointing out main attractions to come back to when you have some time after
