You will learn how to recognize, prevent and remedy stress and the phenomenon of professional exhaustion known as ‘burn out’, so that you can improve the quality of your youth work and enhance your professional performance and competences.

General Description

The main aim of this training course is to identify challenges youth workers and educators face in daily life and to support them in developing the ability for early recognition of signs of heightened stress and burn out. Building your capacity to identify and prevent burn out, as well as to remedy it, will enhance your emotional resilience, as well as your motivation to perform better within your role.

This training course will focus on some of the main tenets of Emotional Intelligence, i.e. that of self-awareness and self-management. These lie on the foundation of self-observation, which we will have the opportunity to apply in real time, so as to learn how to extract knowledge that helps us become more aware of ourselves and more capable of managing our emotions, so that they serve us and not sabotage us in our roles.

Living in a ‘VUCA’ (vulnerable, uncertain, complex, ambiguous) world means that our roles as youth workers and educators have also become more demanding and pressurizing, often leaving us feeling overwhelmed and incapable of effectively managing ourselves, not only in our roles, but also in our relationships. We will learn the value of self-reflection and, in learning how to empathize with others but also with ourselves, through a range of practical tools we will learn how to make our lives easier and more enjoyable!

The methodology of the training course is based on the principles of non-formal education and strongly supports self-reflection, learning through experience and self-directed learning. The programme will include a variety of activities, discussions, workshop sessions, etc. to encourage critical thinking and self-awareness. A strong focus will be put on Coaching as tried-and-tested method for creatively addressing pressing problems; a range of practical, hands-on, easy-to-use tools will be shared and applied in real time. English will be the working language of the training course.

We acknowledge and applaud the fact that young people’s health and well-being is a priority in Erasmus+ Youth Programme and it is also highlighted in the European Youth Strategy.

Specific objectives

  • To identify and acknowledge challenges we face when working with youth
  • To thoroughly learn and experience the value of self-reflection
  • To learn how to empathize with others but also with themselves
  • To improve their Emotional Intelligence through improving their self-awareness and emotional self-management
  • To apply practical tools for recognizing and managing stress, as well as for recognizing, preventing and managing burn out, which can be used for life
  • To enjoy a space for peer learning and support: exchanging relevant experiences and good practices
  • To prioritize self-care and emotional wellness and apply these in holistic, creative ways
  • To understand and appreciate the value of failures and mistakes, rather than be ‘burdened’ by them; to be able to convey this to their youth groups, as positive role models
  • To recognize the educational value of non-formal learning activities in empowering others

Who can apply?

  1. Youth workers, youth leaders, teachers, people who are directly working with youth and/or youth educational organizations
  2. Youth trainers and educators

  4. Working staff of youth organizations
  5. Youth professionals who are motivated to share their work experience and challenges so as to collectively LEARN
  6. Youth professionals who are actively seeking to improve their toolbox and enrich it with new, effective approaches
  7. Youth professionals who are available and willing to take an active part in the FULL duration of the training course
  8. Youth professionals who are over 18 years old and are comfortable in communicating in English

Empowerment Is a buzz word commonly used in the youth sector but young people need platforms that support them to think consciously and critically about issues that affect their lives, the communities they live in.

General Description

This seminar is for youth workers and leaders to promote young people’s conscious active citizenship civic competence so that they can analyze issues in their community with a view to proposing innovative solutions to bring about social change.

Aims:

To explore how to support young people’s conscious active citizenship

Objectives:

  • To provide a space for youth workers to critically reflect on how their Youth work practise empowers or disempowers young people
  • To understand how to empower young people to take action on issues affecting them in their community
  • To support youth workers to develop the tools they need to promote conscious active citizenship with young people
  • To explore how policy can support young people becoming change makers
  • To explore how Erasmus+ can support young people becoming active citizens

Expected Results :

  • Youth workers who understand how to engage young people
  • Youth workers are more equip to support young people to become more active on issues affecting them
  • Young people are more conscious of the communities and world they live in

As part of this training we should develop a toolkit in advance of the training that youth workers can use later with the young people they work with.

The training helps you to clarify your understanding of mental health and discover how you can support young people’s mental health in your work. Moreover, you will learn how youth exchanges fit into the discussion.

General Description

Supporting Mental Health Is Easy

When talking about mental health, you may instantly think about negative issues like depression and mental illnesses. You should not. We all have a state of mental health, one day our mental health can be worse, one day better. But there are concrete ways how to promote our mental well being.

In this training you will understand better what affects our mental health and how we can take care of it. You will learn methods to discuss the topic with young people and have time to think how to help their well being. This is important for you, if you are working with young people. And you should be, because youth exchanges need young people.

Can youth exchanges promote mental health?

Well, yes. You might know that you feel better when you feel heard, you feel you belong to a group, you have your place in there and others accept and support you. You also may recognise it feels good to accomplish interesting tasks, explore unknown things and overcome a nice challenge. Youth exchanges can offer all of this to your young people, if you take care that they are able to be involved, respected and supported in planning, preparation and carrying out of exchanges.

  • In this training you will learn, how you can help young people to have ownership in their youth exchange.
  • You will have a small pre-task before your arrival, so be prepared to return it.

Who is this training for?

You should be interested in the topic of mental wellbeing as well as in international youth work.

You may be interested in

  • challenging your understanding of mental wellbeing
  • learning ways to talk about mental health with young people
  • learning working ways to promote mental health
  • organising youth exchanges where young people are actively involved in the projects
  • learning ways to support young people’s involvement in youth exchange projects
  • understanding how mental health can be discussed in youth exchanges
  • finding possible partners to future youth exchanges who share the same understanding of working ways

It is much better if you will already have a group of young people that you are working with. It is even better, if you have talked with them about the possibility of an international youth exchange and they are interested in one. We will prioritise applicants who work regularly with a group of young people and regularly organise daily or weekly local activities for them. Starting to plan a youth exchange is much easier, if you can start working with your group when you return home.

If you only organise international activities and always recruit the participants in the projects after they have been granted, you are not the kind of participant we are looking for.

Peaceful (and sleepy) countryside

The training takes you to a remote area in Eastern Finland, over 500 km to the north of Helsinki. Youth Centre Hyvärilä is one of the state founded youth centres in Finland. It is located by a lake surrounded by nature. It is not close to services, but they offer good facilities for training, accommodation and meals.

You will also have time to chat and change opinions, practices and ideas with youth workers from other countries and look at the midnight sun by a Finnish lake.

You should know, though, that there will be youth groups around, which means you cannot use alcohol in the youth centre area. Finnish youth work is substance free and you should also respect that in our country.

Training Course: LTTC InFormal Evolution

InFormal Evolution is a long-term blended course aiming at the integration of non-formal education approach to the formal system for youth empowerment at local level.

General Description

The long-term project “InFormal Evolution”– integration of non-formal education approach to the formal education system for youth empowerment at local level is an attempt to use non-formal education as a tool for youth empowerment in order to address the current issues and to build a stable and productive trans-national co-working platform for educators coming from formal education and youth field (NGOs and other youth authorities).

This project particularly targeting educators, teachers, professors, trainers, community leaders and policy makers in the field of education that often contradict their approaches instead of working for the common goal.

NFE is almost always associated with youth work out of curriculum = not-serious. Formal education is often too frontal, too boring and killing initiatives and critical thinking – essential skills of young people. And it seems like there is no middle. With this project we want to bring two systems: formal and non-formal for dialogue, and building sustainable cooperation for the common aim.

Objectives:

  • To unite efforts of youth workers coming from formal and other youth field backgrounds for youth empowerment at local level by using non-formal education;
  • To develop competencies of educators in the fields of human rights education, active citizenship, global education and inter-cultural learning
  • To explore diverse methodologies, approaches and tools and to adjust them to the local youth work and education practice
  • To build a necessary set of competences for proficient use of NFE instruments and tools for youth empowerment at local level;
  • To reflect on recognition of youth work in formal schooling
  • Developing consistency of cross-sectoral and transnational cooperation for better recognition
  • To provide the opportunity to assess the quality of NFE activities and youth empowerment process at local level;
  • To create a network of practitioners, able to adjust diverse/creative methodologies for formal schooling and speak “the same language” with schools educators.

Participants:

The training course is open for educators coming from formal and non-formal education system (trainers, teachers, facilitators), psychologists and social workers from the formal (educational) institutions; youth workers dealing with young people and staff from NGOs and formal education system as main target group.

Criteria for Selection

  • fluent in English
  • involved in educational projects with young people either in formal or non-formal contexts connected to the topic of youth empowerment
  • aware of their own learning needs (personal and professional)
  • committed to go through whole long-term learning process including 3 residential training courses, 3 online courses and 2 local practice stages that involves 30 hrs. of practice in local context using the non-formal methodology. All participants will be asked to submit reports for the practice phase. The strict deadlines will be given.
  • committed for self-directed learning & learning outcomes as well as high level of motivation and discipline, ability to deal effectively with the procrastination

  • committed to reflect on personal learning process and ability to assess critically learning outcomes
  • High commitment for follow up activities and networking
  • Experience in the topic of education and youth empowerment is an asset
  • Openness for and appreciation of non-formal learning process in high diversity context

For three residential activities, two training courses and one seminar full board and lodging costs (meals, accommodation) are covered by organisers for all participants.

The creative lab is designed for critical thinkers, who work with young people and are not afraid of opening controversial questions and questioning concepts.

Have you ever wondered what diversity actually means?
Do you work with people who question if diversity has gone too far?
Living in times when Europe and the world is undergoing major developments, do you ever wonder how to help young people make sense of it all?

Do you think it is time to reconsider the way we (you) work with young people nowadays?
Are you curious about the principles and practices of slow youth work in a world that is changing rapidly?

Would you like to go on an eight months creative journey with a dynamic community of learners?
“EUtopia? – Diversity in a Changing Europe” is a creative, analytical and critical learning experiment which brings new life to old concepts. It is for the very experienced among us, who sometimes feel tired of thinking, and the very fresh ones, who sometimes feel lost and don’t know where to even begin.

If you are ready to dive deep in the meaning of diversity and use what you find to reshape the practices of youth work – then this 7th international edition of EUtopia? is for you! The learning process will last eight months. It will result in improved practices for supporting young people in changing Europe, and it will produce tools that will be shared in an online library for youth workers.

It will be comprised of four elements:

1st part: Home Lab for Introduction – online learning process consisting of 30 hours of individual guided work from March to May (participants are required to dedicate a minimum of 3 hours for online learning throughout the spring)
2nd part: Lab for Critical Analysis – challenging and exploring concepts in Latvia, from 6th to 12th of May 2020
3rd part: Piloting Lab for Creativity and Experimentation – testing it all through local activities implemented by participants in their local communities
4th part: Designing Lab – creating new tools and approaches in Albania, from 6th to 11th of October 2020

The call is open to all professionals working with young people, particularly in non-formal learning settings. The selected participants are requested to take part in all parts of the Lab.

Aim:

The aim of the lab is to provide youth field professionals with an opportunity 1) to explore the complex and diverse realities of young people in a changing Europe, 2) to prepare to better respond to those realities by applying values-based perspective of diversity, and 3) to reshape existing youth work practices.

The objectives of the lab are:

  • to create a community of learners ready to engage in a challenging, self-reflective, long term, dynamic learning process;
  • to explore the relevant socio-political and cultural contexts in which young people grow up today, and critically evaluate the current youth work responses to them;

  • to understand reasoning and motivation behind young people’s views and attitudes, discover how opinions are formed and encourage critical thinking;
  • to challenge/ radicalize the concept of diversity, exploring it from a values-based, rather than from a normative policy perspective;
  • to develop the most relevant skillsets for reconsidering and reshaping youth work practices in accordance with current challenges and slow youth work principles;
  • to develop intercultural and political competences, as identified by the ETS Competence Model for Youth Workers, and to pilot them through activist projects;
  • to discover opportunities to incorporate values-based approach to diversity within Erasmus+ activities and to support international cooperation among participants.

The aim of the creativity lab is to bring together young people, gamers, youth workers, educators to work together on understanding how to use gamification as a tool to provide new digital learning content and develop new gamified concepts.

General Description

European elections 2019 are behind us and the young people had their say!

According to Eurobarometer, we saw that the largest increase in participation in the elections was in under 25 and 25-39 age groups. The high turnout in the 2019 European elections was driven by a surge in participation by young people and the fact that more people believe that their vote counts.

However, our work is far from done – we are aiming at engaging European citizens to question themselves about the kind of Europe they want in the near future. In order to do so, young people should be the key actors and the first ones to be addressed, as they can be leaders and multipliers in identifying and fostering concrete innovative ways towards a more democratic, equal and inclusive Union.

Young activists talk about the European Union often. About its rights and wrongs, why it is helpful and how they wish it would be better. It is expected that others also know about the EU, how it works and why it exists, but are people around us really aware of how the EU came to be? What each body does and how they operate? It is important to get to know the EU if we want to advocate for more rights at the European level.

During 2019, we have developed the online platform www.gamifyEU.org in which we are taking you on a journey of discovery through the history, principles, and purpose of the European Union. We will go on a quest to better understand the EU, from its origins all the way into the present and future. Play your way through Europe, learning more and more about the EU. By playing GamifyEU online game, you will learn some fun facts about Europe and test your knowledge about the EU institutions.

Now, we want to challenge both young people and youth workers to discuss, learn about and new forms of engagement of young people online and offline because for young people the digital possibilities are endless and are a natural part of their lives. Many in the youth work sector are starting to recognize this and to respond to this need that young people have. However, despite the steps forward the youth work sector is taking, it is still far behind the formal education and business sectors as a whole and even further behind the ‘needs’ and experiences of the young people we work with.

The digital world has not been so much appealing to youth workers, because it has had elements of individualism and competition which is incompatible with the principles of youth work stands for:

  • equality of opportunity,
  • solidarity,
  • social justice,
  • critical thinking,
  • cooperation and care.

However, having an open mind-set and skills are important and valuable for all youth leaders and youth workers nowadays, to be able to provide holistic support to young people and cope with the online-offline spaces.

The aim of the creativity lab is to bring together young people, gamers, youth workers, educators to work together on understanding how to use gamification as a tool to provide new digital learning content and develop new gamified concepts and content following the Engage, Connect and Empower concept of the EU Youth Strategy.

During the Creativity Lab we will be:

  • Rethinking and creating new gamified content on topics related to the European values, solidarity, social and human rights following the Engage, Connect and Empower concept of the EU Youth Strategy
  • Learning on how to gamify and digitalise different aspects of youth work
  • Developing guidelines on how to use the gamified content online for educational and youth work-related activities
  • Reflecting on the dimensions and values of non-formal education, youth work and human rights education and assess the links with gaming
  • Analysing diverse non-formal education activities and create proposals for their gamification online
  • Sharing examples of good practice that will serve as inspiration for the new gamified content

After the creativity lab, participants are expected to organise workshops/events/gatherings with young people in their local communities and try out the outcomes of the lab.

Programme of the creativity lab will have the following structure:

  • What is gamification and how to use it for learning? How to digitalise different aspects of youth work and non-formal education – concepts and practices
  • What is out there – examples of gamification as a learning tool (experts and speakers)
  • We can do it – developing concepts for the new games
  • Recommendations and guidelines on gamification in education and youth work

Organisers will reimburse 70% of 250 EUR of maximum travel costs per participant, based on the real costs occurred, provided that all the invoices and boarding passes are sent to the organisers within a month after the event has happened.

In case the travel costs are higher, participants can discuss raising the limit with the organisers.
