Partnership building Activity. Inclusive Volunteering in Social Economy. Turkey

Image result for ANKARA

PBA: Inclusive Volunteering in Social Economy

Dates: 30 April – 4 May 2019

Venue: Ankara, Turkey

Eligible are max 25 participants coming from: Austria, Belgium – FL, Belgium – FR, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom

Application deadline: 10th January 2019

SALTO I&D and the Turkish National Agency for Erasmus+ Youth programme would like to see more young people with fewer opportunities taking part in volunteering projects.

General Description

Do you have experience working with individuals with special needs such as disability, social issues, mental challenges or an organisational environment that would welcome young people with such needs? Perhaps you’re experienced with volunteering but need more partners who can host these young people? Or maybe you just want to make a difference to young people’s lives…

Then this partnership building activity is for you! We would like to see more young people with fewer opportunities taking part in volunteering projects, but many hosting projects are not adapted or do not provide the needed extra support for young people (18-30 years) with special needs.

We believe that social economy organisations, with the necessary structures in place to support volunteers from disavantaged background in their activities, could become the perfect hosting place for these young people.

Hosting European volunteers gives not only the opportunity to change lives but the chance to add an international dimension and increase organisational capacity. We therefore want to bring ‘social economy’ organisations together with inclusion, youth and volunteering fields to explore the possibilities, advantages and concerns of having an European Volunteer.

Following a 2017 Inclusion & Diversity Strategy Steering Group meeting with representatives of social economy and the Youth and Vocational Education Forum 2018 (hosted in UK as part of the long term Toward’s Collaborative Practice), social economy organisations have been identified as often having projects or activities that are particularly directed towards people in underprivileged situations.

Despite frequently seeking committed volunteers to support their work, many organisations remain unaware of European volunteering funding opportunities, requirements and structures – such as the European Solidarity Corps. This partnership-building activity is a follow-up of the training course under the same topic taking place in Glasgow 10-14 December 2018.

This 3-day activity will take place in Ankara from 30th April (arrival day) to 4th May (departure) 2019 and it will be a unique opportunity to find partners to create inclusive volunteering projects in the framework of ESC. Although the programme also covers jobs and traineeships opportunities, this activity will only focus on quality volunteering projects.

General aim:

To introduce European volunteering projects to social economy organisations and encourage partnerships with inclusion, youth and volunteering organisations for quality, sustainable volunteering projects for young people with fewer opportunities.

Objectives:

– To get acquainted with the existing opportunities for youth volunteers’ placement, under European Solidarity Corps
– To share different practices on how to involve volunteers with fewer opportunities
– To motivate social economy organisations to host and send volunteers with fewer opportunities
– To develop skills in Erasmus+/ESC project management, specifically on volunteering initiatives
– To foster partnership building of potential hosting/supporting organisations equipped to support young people with fewer opportunities

Profile of participants at the course:

– Staff members/volunteers of social economy and volunteering organisations able to work on inclusion or directly with young people with fewer opportunities
– Youth workers (grassroots – involved in outreach youth work and directly working with young people with fewer opportunities)
– Staff members/volunteers involved in inclusion organisations
– Able to work in (international) English
– From ESC programme countries
– Former participants of the TC held in Glasgow (December 2018) are strongly encouraged to apply.

Why

This 9 day study visit will allow you to experience the place, the people and the approaches to the social economy, community based enterprise, routes to employment and hopefully build a platform for new collaborations between Europe and South Africa.

What’s it About

Port Elizabeth is a very friendly (and windy) city in South Africa where extreme poverty, middle income, and high income, social challenges all come together. The cultural influences of the black, coloured and white communities, as well as the region’s colonial past are major factors in shaping the approaches and solutions evident to economic and civil society issues that the communities of Port Elizabeth are facing. There is a cultural richness in its diversity, where privilege, education, social class, rituals and history are what make it a unique place to visit, learn, share and explore.

During the study visit you will meet local and international people who will share their social enterprise stories, visit local and international social and community enterprise and social economy and meet with stakeholders, volunteers and staff engaged in this work. We see this very much as a two way process and an equal exchange of practice, learning and development.

Our Solidarity projects are realised in partnership with the South African organisation Ready4Life and a wide range of other organisations, start-ups and businesses. Breakthrough and the partnership are responsible for the organisation and realisation of the Study Visit content, including networking, learning, reflection and documentation. The welcome and closing dinner as well as one community lunch and the conference day lunch will be covered by the organisation.
