In this online training course you will learn all the basics you need to organise and apply for a grant for youth exchanges in Erasmus+ YiA, with a clear focus on projects concretely involving young people from the very beginning of the process.

General Description

In this activity we concentrate on youth-adult pairings: 1 experienced adult leader + 1 or 2 young people (13-18 year-olds).

The training is built on the creation of a quality basis in youth exchanges. It also provides the space to develop concrete project ideas amongst quality partnerships, with the aim of submitting application proposals for the future Erasmus+ Youth in Action deadlines.

In light of the Covid-19 experience, this particular course will be delivered online and will explore the opportunities and challenges of youth mobility now and in the future. The residential ‘EYE Opener’ training course has been renamed and reorganised as the online ‘EYE Liner’.

Objectives:

  • to provide information on current and future Erasmus+ Youth in Action youth exchanges
  • to provide a group learning experience in the process of setting up a youth exchange project
  • to develop basic competences (skills, knowledge & attitudes) to organise a youth exchange
  • to understand non-formal learning and young people’s participation in learning
  • to explore the role of a group leader in young people’s learning process
  • to enhance the active participation of young people in planning of youth exchanges

The fact that young people can take part in the training offers an entirely new dynamic to the process. Young people develop first-hand understanding of project building, through simulated youth exchange activity and the cooperation and partnership between youth leaders and young people deepens.

Some tasks are done in national groups and some in international partnership groups. A key methodological feature is enabling young people and youth leaders to work in separate groups, at times, and then bringing the groups together to share learning and ideas; in this process young people are encouraged to take the lead, thereby promoting participation and empowerment. The training provides evidence of young people’s competences in project planning, independent of youth leaders.

Programme:

This training is a learning-by-doing experience, built on a simulation exercise, interspersed with workshops, info sessions and activities to enrich the group dynamics, ending with a Youthpass-focused evaluation. The training will comprise a framework of planned plenary sessions, involving all participants, alongside a parallel process of smaller group work, designed to deliver the training objectives in a flexible youth-centred format.

The overall programmed timetable is as follows:

The training course will guide the participants towards better quality in supporting E+/ESC/EVS volunteers´ emotional well-being and understanding of the field of mental health and its importance for everyone.

Target group: volunteering project coordinators, members of hosting organisations working directly with volunteers/ assigning tasks.

With this TC we want to:

  • Equip pax with means to support volunteers in their emotional and psychological well-being, to recognize signs of possible mental crisis
  • Equip pax with means to support the project environment close to the volunteer (co-workers, staff of the organisation, flatmates, co-volunteers) when such crisis occurs
  • Enable pax to set the boundary beyond which reaching for a professional help is necessary
  • Help pax to map institutions / organisations etc. able to help them in their close environment in order to create a safety network
  • Show pax how they can support themselves in times of crisis during the volunteering project
    COVID-19 and how the pandemic influenced volunteers and organisations

A Youth Exchange needs content. Tools for Youth Exchanges is a training that enables participants to explore tools around group processes, (intercultural) learning, involvement of young people and how to facilitate these tools during a youth exchange.

General Description

The overall aim of TYE – Tools for Youth Exchanges – is for youth leaders and youth workers to explore, share and adapt tools that can be used to improve their youth exchange projects.

Further TYE is designed according to the following objectives:

  • To increase awareness of group processes and tools that facilitate group development
  • To develop competences in designing and facilitating educational workshops
  • To explore tools that support learning process, including debriefing and recognition of learning.
  • To explore tools and models that focus on intercultural learning.
  • To explore how to motivate young people to be actively involved at all stages of a youth exchange project.
  • To gain understanding of how to support young people during the follow-up phase of a youth exchange project.

Expected profile of participants:

The training course is designed for voluntary and professional youth workers, working directly with young people and who have one from the following experiences with Erasmus+ Youth Programme:

  • Have experience in organising and/or participating as a team member in international youth exchange;
  • Have applied for a youth exchange project funding and are waiting for an answer or just about to implement a youth exchange;
  • Have applied for a youth exchange project and has been rejected (and are planning to apply again).

You should have a direct contact with young people who are already involved or want to get involved in an international youth exchanges.

This training course will be in English, without any possibility of permanent translation. Therefore, we ask you to have a good level of English (to be able to understand and to communicate).

Participants should be at least 18 years old.

Expected group size is approximately 25-30 participants

Course programme:

TYE course programme is built on the past experiences of participants and offers variety of workshops, info-sessions, activities to improve youth exchange practices of using tools and methods. Attached is the provisional programme of the course.

The Sustainability Academy is a 4-week online training in sustainable youth work. Using Design Thinking, we will focus on sustainable development principles, social entrepreneurship and circular economy and learn to apply those concepts in youth work.

General Description

The Sustainability Academy is a 50h online training focused on sustainability in youth work. Over 4 weeks, the participants will be invited to use Design thinking methodology to identify the challenges they face and elaborate with young people:

  • climate change,
  • abuse of the environmental recourses,
  • consumption,
  • social injustice and others.

With Fridays for Future young people express already their disagreement to how older generations approach the issues. Is it possible to co-create with them long-term actions, where all generations could get involved in common strategy?

During the course the participants will be assisted with 3 coaches experienced in non-formal education and Design Thinking as well as 3 experts in areas of Sustainable development, Circular Economy and Social Entrepreneurship. Together they will explore potential solutions for more sustainable lifestyles and communities. Online character of the training will allow the participants to stay connected to their local realities and yet have a chance to check it with international colleagues.

The main objectives are:

  • Understand current environmental and social challenges and the way young people approach them (5R: reuse, reduce, recycle, rethink, refuse)
  • Rethink the current way of doing: prepare young people to co-create more circular, sustainable world
  • Identify already existing tools used in youth work and community work in Luxembourg and Europe (incl virtual visits and meetings to the projects)
  • Co-create potential solutions that can be multiplied on local and European level
  • Learn Design Thinking process by applying it to solve concrete challenge

The participants will have a chance to interact with others via synchronized meetings on an online platform (Zoom) as well as explore their own communities and report the results using common online tools, like Padlet, Miro, Mural.

The overall course time will be divided between plenary sessions (keynotes, input sessions, virtual visits or the projects in Luxemburg), small group work (assisted by coaches and experts), individual learning (research and testing) and online social actions (e.g. yoga class, zero-waste cooking, online concert).

Participation in the whole course is required to be able to receive the certificate.

The web-based training discusses how to support, design and implement virtual exchanges in youth work. The training offers an insight to an existing practice in virtual exchanges.

General Description

Virtual Exchanges for Youth Work

The aim of the training is to introduce youth workers to the practice of virtual exchange through an experiential learning approach.

The trainers build on the knowledge and experience of the participants themselves and facilitate the process of sharing knowledge and experience in a transnational virtual exchange context.

The training does not aim for designing a complete virtual exchange, but it gives an understanding what virtual exchanges are and how the participants can design one themselves after the training.

The training can provide a possibility for making partnerships for future virtual exchanges.

Content elements

The following content is discussed in the training:

  • discuss why VE can be relevant to youth work
  • explore different models of virtual exchange: ‘ready-made’ and ‘grassroots’
  • explore the components of a virtual exchange
  • explore the modes of communication in virtual exchange: theatre, music, visual arts, minecraft, wikipedia
  • develope a plan/outline for our virtual exchange
  • explore and evaluate technologies for the exchange
  • identify possible challenges and risks in virtual exchange, development ideas
  • creating partnerships for future virtual exchanges
    An intensive training period

The training is organised between 9.-23. June 2020 and it consists of four 2 hour online webinars (synchronised learning) and roughly 10 hours of individual work (unsynchronised learning). Approximately 18 hours of working time in two and half weeks.

General Description

For many years now, experts and youth work professionals have agreed on one fact: young people are increasingly threatened by social exclusion: lack of integration into society, disengagement from politics, refuge into delinquency and violence, virtualization of social relations, etc.

The personal, social, cultural and economic context strongly influences this process of “vulnerability”, especially into categories of youth called “young people with less opportunities”.

Hence, many actions and projects have focused on inclusion of young people with less opportunities by promoting dialogue, active participation and citizenship. In this context, it is important to understand the vulnerability of some categories of young people in order to work on it and transform it into an asset.

In modern society, vulnerability is generally seen as a weakness and an obstacle to succeed in social life.

This negative approach also affect youth workers in their perceptions and ways of working!

Against the current trend, we think that vulnerability must be explored as a lever of action. We believe in the potential of vulnerability as an approach to connect with youngsters that feel a strong disconnection with society.

Beyond the symptom, we aim to restore the sense of belonging and affiliation of young people by equipping them with life competences, reinforcing their resilience and strengthening their values. Through non-formal and informal learning, this alternative approach helps to promote active citizenship and to strengthen social inclusion of young people.

This training course aims to support youth workers to develop their competences in understanding vulnerability and exploring its potential in reinforcing young people’s self confidence. In this training course, participants will experience a positive approach of vulnerability which is a key element in establishing true connections with young people. We will explore vulnerability through non-formal education and experiential learning methods.

Objectives:

  • To provide participants with concepts and theoretical background about vulnerability and its role within the process of inclusion/exclusion;
  • To share tools and practices of engaging with vulnerable groups, in an international context;
  • To take into account the participants own vulnerable sides in order to transform them as a strength by providing with a deeper understanding of vulnerability on a personal and interpersonal level;
  • To explore the potential of vulnerability in order to transform it in an inclusion strength for young people in their realities;

Methodology

The methodology will be participant-centered, based on non-formal education, experiential and intercultural learning; working methods will be diverse and interactive in order to ensure a balance between sharing, theory and practice.
